Position Type: Part-time, Employee  (approx. 10 – 15 hours per week)

Location: New Westminster Neighbourhood House, New Westminster, BC / Operating out of St. Barnabas Hall – 1010 5th Ave. New Westminster. There will also be an opportunity for some work to be done remotely.

The New West Neighbourhood (NWNH) supports our local community to create opportunities for belonging and connection to neighbours and the land.

We believe in creating a welcoming, inclusive space where neighbours support one another. The Grocery Project (supported by the Vancouver Food Bank) is integral to our community, providing not just food, but also connection, dignity, and care for those who come through our doors. In partnership with Shiloh 5th Avenue United Church and St. Barnabas Anglican Church, we are working to support the weekly organization and delivery of food for our neighbours.

The New West Neighbourhood House is dedicated to creating a welcoming space where everyone can connect and feel a genuine sense of belonging and friendship. We are also guided by an asset-based community development ethos—focusing on the strengths, skills, and relationships that already exist within our community and working together to support their growth.

About the Role

In order to continue to support our programs, we are hiring a Community Connector. This position will play a key role in strengthening and growing the Welcome Dinner program while also supporting the Grocery Project through administrative coordination, on-site engagement, and fundraising efforts.

 

This role will begin as a part-time employee position and will be under the direction of the Executive Director. Mentoring, training and professional development will be provided. We are looking for someone who has previous experience working in food security and with diverse community members. 

Key Responsibilities

Grocery Project Program Operations

  • Attend food distribution days (Wednesdays) to ensure efficiency and a welcoming atmosphere.
  • In collaboration with Grocery Project Partners – coordinate food collection, sorting, storage, and distribution.
  • Ensure food safety practices are followed at all times.
  • Greet and support individuals and families who access the food bank with compassion, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Ensure the food bank is a safe and inclusive space for all.
  • Support food drives and donation campaigns.
  • Represent the neighbourhood house and food bank at community events as needed.
  • Track program statistics such as the number of households served and volunteer hours.
  • Provide data and updates for grant reporting and fundraising.

Welcome Dinners Program Operations

  • Work with the Executive Director and/or the Programming Committee to help plan the logistics of each dinner. 
  • Attend monthly welcome dinners and support volunteers.
  • Ensure food safety practicesare followed at all times.

The types of experience we are looking for:

  • A minimum of one year experience in food security programs, food handling, and inventory management
  • A minimum of two to four years experience (paid or unpaid) with marginalized and diverse communities. We would also consider lived experience or a combination of lived experience relevant to these communties.
  • Some familiarity with everyday administrative tasks is helpful, such as organizing information, helping with schedules, or using email and basic computer tools. We welcome experience gained through work, volunteering or community activities, and we are happy to support learning on the job.
  • Ability to provide effective support to volunteers and contribute to a welcoming, community-centred environment.
  • The essential duties of this position include occasional lifting and carrying of supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.

  • Food Safe Certification (we can support the successful candidate in achieving).

  • Preference will be given to New Westminster residents.

 Other skills that will be helpful:

  • Friendly, approachable communication style and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Able to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Comfortable making decisions guided by policies, procedures and organizational values.
  • Understanding systemic issues that lead to or cause food insecurity.

Compensation: $22.00 per hour. This is a part-time position of approximately 10–15 hours per week. Vacation pay will be provided in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act (minimum 4% of gross wages for employees with less than five years of service).
